Senior Energy Analyst

Our client is seeking a highly analytical and technically strong Senior Energy Analyst to join their growing team in Cape Town. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced quantitative professional to play a key role in shaping energy trading strategies, developing advanced analytical models, and supporting the growth of a rapidly expanding renewable energy portfolio. The successful candidate will combine strong modelling expertise with software development capabilities to deliver meaningful insights that support strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Analytics, Data & Trading

  • Prepare customer proposals, including savings estimates and renewable energy penetration analyses
  • Support responses to customer RFPs and commercial opportunities
  • Develop and maintain proposal templates, analytical tools, and reporting processes
  • Manage and improve databases containing market, contract, operational, and portfolio data
  • Build automation tools for analytics, reporting, and operational processes
  • Analyse generation, storage, and customer demand portfolios to identify optimisation opportunities
  • Monitor electricity tariffs, wheeling structures, market developments, and energy forecasts
  • Support trading strategy development and portfolio optimisation initiatives
  • Deliver analytical reports and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist with new product development and commercial evaluations
  • Analyse regulatory frameworks and industry compliance requirements

Model Development & Software Engineering

  • Design, develop, and maintain Python-based analytical and optimisation models
  • Enhance Excel models and ensure alignment with internal modelling standards
  • Build forecasting, dispatch, allocation, and proposal-generation models
  • Develop automated data pipelines and database integrations
  • Maintain high-quality, documented, and version-controlled code
  • Leverage AI and automation tools to improve development efficiency

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a quantitative, analytical, or modelling-focused role
  • Strong Python development experience, including pandas, NumPy, and data processing tools
  • Advanced Excel and commercial modelling capabilities
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced environment

Advantageous Experience

  • Renewable energy, electricity markets, or energy trading experience
  • Time-series forecasting and price modelling
  • Database management and integrations
  • Git, CI/CD, and collaborative development workflows
  • Power BI, Tableau, Plotly, Dash, or similar visualisation tools
  • Energy storage modelling and portfolio optimisation
