MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 

Under the Technical supervision of the Program Manager and the management of the Medical Supervisor, the Medical Doctor will provide clinical leadership and direct patient care in the CTU, ensuring timely diagnosis, standardized case management of cholera, infection prevention and control IPC, and quality emergency response in line with MdM and national cholera treatment protocols.

TASKS DESCRIPTION:

Clinical Management of Cholera Cases

  • Provide triage, assessment, and treatment of suspected and confirmed cholera cases.
  •  Ensure prompt classification of dehydration status no dehydration, Mild, moderate and severe. 
  •  Initiate and supervise appropriate rehydration therapy ORS and IV fluids according to protocols. 
  •  Prescribe and oversee adjunct treatments e.g., antibiotics for severe cases per guidelines, zinc for children where applicable. 
  • Manage complications and medical emergencies and refer severe cases when necessary. 
  • Ensure accurate documentation of case management in patient records.

CTU Clinical Leadership

  • Supervise nurses, CHWs, and other CTU staff to ensure adherence to cholera treatment protocols. 
  • Organize patient flow including triage, observation, treatment, and discharge areas.
  • Ensure standardized clinical decision-making across the team. 
  • Conduct on-the-job coaching and refresher guidance on cholera case management.

 Infection Prevention and Control IPC

  • Enforce strict IPC measures within the CTU hand hygiene, PPE use, chlorine disinfection. 
  • Ensure proper isolation of suspected and confirmed cases. 
  • Monitor and reduce risk of nosocomial transmission among patients and staff. 
  • Ensure safe waste management and decontamination procedures.

Surveillance, Data Collection & Reporting

  • Ensure daily collection and validation of cholera case data admissions, deaths, recoveries. 
  • Monitor case fatality rate CFR and alert Supervisors on the increase. 
  • Participate in epidemiological trend analysis and outbreak reporting. 
  • Submit daily/weekly CTU reports to the Program Manager.

Logistics & Operational Support CTU Specific

  • Ensure availability and correct use of medical supplies ORS, IV fluids, antibiotics, PPE with the medical supervisor. 
  • Support daily stock monitoring of essential CTU commodities with the pharmacist and medical supervisor. 
  • Participate in setup and organization of CTU patient flow areas when needed.

Coordination & Reporting

  • Participate in MdM medical coordination meetings and emergency briefings. 
  • Liaise with surveillance, WASH. 
  • Ensure timely communication with medical supervisor and Program Manager on clinical challenges or gaps. 

OTHERS:

  • Establish good relationship with the different stakeholders to have a smooth implementation of MdM project
  • Be flexible in performing his/her duties to ensure that beneficiaries are getting good quality services
  • Inform immediately the security focal point in case of any security problem in the field
  • Perform other additional duties on request of the Program Manager or Medical Supervisor
  • Develop network within other health INGOs and NNGOs

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION:

Education / Qualifications

  • MBBS
  • Other health related certification is of added value.

Professional Experience

  • At least 3 years relevant professional experience in a similar position in humanitarian sector or supervision of health facilities.
  • Proven experience working with MoH structures and in health system strengthening.
  • Experience in emergency response, outbreak management, and integrated health programming.
  • Strong ability to analyze epidemiological contexts and recommend relevant interventions.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams

Technical Skills

  • Strong communication and report-writing abilities.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Personal Skills

  • Strong leadership, mentoring and supervision skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage priorities and make rapid, informed decisions.
  • Culturally sensitive, respectful, and adaptable.
  • Flexibility and readiness for irregular working hours during emergency response.

Languages

  • Fluency in English required.
  • Knowledge of local language is an added value.
