Job Summary:

The Head of Electrical Department is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational reliability, and safety of the entire electrical infrastructure. This role ensures 100% power availability, oversees transmission/distribution systems, drives cost-saving initiatives, and ensures compliance with grid codes and statutory regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic & Operational Management:

  • Lead the planning, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of all HT/LT electrical equipment (Generators, Transformers, Switchgear, UPS, Battery Banks, and Motors).
  • Ensure synchronization with the grid and manage power evacuation systems.
  • Develop and implement preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance schedules.

Reliability & Troubleshooting:

  • Act as the final authority for troubleshooting major electrical faults, grid disturbances, and blackout scenarios.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for major breakdowns and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Budget & Cost Control:

  • Prepare and manage the annual electrical OPEX and CAPEX budgets.
  • Monitor energy consumption, optimize power factor, and implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce unit costs.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure strict adherence to IE Rules, CEA regulations, and safety standards (NFPA, OSHA).
  • Oversee the issuance of PTW (Permit to Work) and LOTO (Lock-out/Tag-out) procedures.
  • Liaise with the State Electricity Board and regulatory authorities for statutory clearances.

Team Development:

  • Mentor, train, and evaluate the performance of the electrical engineering team.
  • Identify skill gaps and organize training programs on new technologies and safety protocols.

Competencies:

  • Expert knowledge of Protection Relays, SCADA, DCS integration, and Switchyard operations.
  • Strong crisis management and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in SAP (Plant Maintenance module) and MS Project.

Qualifications:

  • B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering (M.Tech preferred).
  • 18–25 years of experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role in a large thermal/hydro/solar plant.
